Hei Matau or fish hooks are an exceptionally important tool that have been used for 10s of thousands of years by cultures all over the world. There are many universal designs and specie specific matau strewn throughout history and a huge range of materials have been used to produce these seeming simple tools. This piece is constructed with Pounamu Upokohue/Pilot Whale bone and epoxy, it should be taken off when entering hot water to preserve the integrity of the epoxy.

Made from a beautiful Pakohe from the Whakatū/Nelson and Upokohue/Pilot Whale bone from Mohua/Golden Bay at the top of the South Island.
